If you dream of cozying up next to a fire, but you live in an apartment or other housing which doesn't allow a typical wood-burning fireplace; there is an answer, a modern electric fireplace. A modern electric fireplace functions just like any other piece of furniture in your house. There are small units available which are portable just like your television or computer. Simply plug the unit into a common household plug and you can enjoy all the comforts a wood-burning fireplace can offer.

There are two types of modern electric fireplaces: The portable plug-and-play units and those that have built-in installation feature. The built-in units look just like a normal fireplace except of course without a chimney installed. Remember no venting is required for modern electric fireplaces. The larger non-portable units usually include a mantel, face and hearth. They typically range from 17 inches to 64 inches in width, and 23 inches to 48 inches in height. If the unit is not built-in but instead against the wall, it will typically extend two feet from the base of the wall.

There are a variety of different styles available for the larger non-portable modern electric fireplaces. Some Euro-styles come complete with a full marble mantel, face, and hearth or you can choose the more traditional fireplace styles. The mantels are typically available in a variety of different woods such as cherry and mahogany and different types and colors of stone. The actual fireplace will typically be stainless steel, chrome, brass or cast iron.
